Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 135 is involved in community activities for both Veterans and non Veterans. Whenever there’s a known need for a Veteran and their family, Unit 135 assists as much as they can based on the situation at hand and/or guides them to other specific resources that would better meet their needs. Refer to the following information regarding specific programs Unit 135 is involved in.

Local Food Drives
The Unit tries to hold two Food Drives a year in conjunction with the local grocery store’s case sale. We have found that there’s a lot more given during these timeframes. All proceeds and cash collected go to the local Lolo Food Bank which is open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month located at the Lolo Community Center. We’ve received excellent feedback from the director stating how much the donations mean to the program and assisting with the ever constant need in the community.

Junior Activities
Juniors consist of daughters and/or granddaughters of Veterans who are American Legion members. The age ranges from birth to 18 years of age.  They learn about volunteerism, loyalty to God and country, justice, freedom and democracy by assisting our senior members with their projects. They hand out Auxiliary Poppies, learn about flag education and assist with this program, attend regular meetings and American Legion Family events. They also assist The Sons of the American Legion members with community clean-up, help with the food drive and local bazaar activities as well as attend American Legion family field trips.

Legion Family Events
Part of our mission is also supporting the American Legion. We attend and assist where needed with any of their projects or events such as family brunches, potlucks, raffles, flag education to various children organizations and local school, yearly opening flag ceremony for the Lolo Little League, flag pole project for the Lolo Community Center and as needed District 5 events.

Community Service Projects
The main community service project Unit 135 has been a part of is the Adopt-A-Family during Christmas. For the past several years we’ve applied for and received a grant from Town Pump Adopt-A-Family Christmas program. Each year we notify the local school that we have a grant and would like to help a local family in need. The school picks the family. What fun we have selecting gifts for all family members (including parents), buying food, providing assistance if needed for rent/house payment, car repairs, utilities, etc. We deliver everything back to the school who then delivers to the family.
